The National Museum

If you are visiting the Maldives on vacation and wish to understand the culture, religions and history of these gorgeous islands in more detail, then a trip to the National Museum should definitely form part of your visit. The National Museum is housed in the only remaining building of Sultan's Palace, now known as Sultan's Place in the capital, Malè. One of Maldives most interesting and educational tourist attractions, the National Museum was established in 1952 and guests can look forward to a display of valuable objects that depict the rich cultural history of the country and preserve the past. Many of the items in the museum belonged to the Sultans, but you can also find some astounding articles here such as ornaments and costumes which were worn by royals, some ancient stone items that bear testament to Maldives pre-Islamic period, paper and cloth manuscripts, impressive arms and armour, anthropological objects and a number of other interesting items reflecting on the past Maldivian way of living, and the many historical happenings.

The Grand Friday Mosque

In the Capital of Malè guests can enjoy a very interesting and insightful visit to the symbolic Grand Friday Mosque, which was opened in 1984 and built with assistance from the Gulf States, Pakistan, Brunei and Malaysia. An impressive and simplistic building that is strikingly white and built in marble, the Grand Friday Mosque is the biggest mosque in the country and rises above the other buildings with its seemingly golden dome glistening in the sunlight. This magnificent Mosque is open to tourists from 9am to 5pm, outside of prayer times - to all non-Muslim visitors; the mosque closes 15 minutes before prayer time and for the hours that follow. It is recommended that guests should pay a visit between the hours of 2pm and 3 pm - it isn't encouraged that large crowds of tourists visit together, but if guests are truly interested and dress respectfully (men in long trousers and woman in a long skirt or dress that is not revealing) then you will be allowed inside. The main prayer hall is so large that it can accommodate 5000 worshippers at a time; it also features beautifully carved panels and doors, impressive chandeliers and a carpet that was specially woven.
